As the Maine Legislature considers bills to modify the citizen initiative and people's veto process, it should emphasize transparency without burdening citizens' fundamental right to direct democracy.

Ballot initiative plan gets mixed reviews

H.B. 36, sponsored by Rep. Kyle Johansen, R-Ketchikan, would make groups, individuals and corporations who contribute to initiatives during the signature-gathering stages report to the state.
