Perfect storm of political astro-turfing


The State: Converging on South Carolina's body politic from three different directions - the executive, the judiciary and the legislature -three allegedly "grass-roots" groups have sprung into action this month to represent the interests of their benefactors. The only question is, who are their benefactors? In the legislative arena, the Columbia-based voucher lobbying group South Carolinians for Responsible Government, perhaps the epitome of all faux-grassroots groups, managed to force a Senate hearing of its sponsors' perennial pet legislation, a bill to divert taxpayer money toward private schools. SCRG has made its name (and made its name ironic) by funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars - more than half a million from Howard Rich himself in 2008 - into the campaigns of voucher-friendly legislative candidates on behalf of its out-of-state financiers.
