State won’t appeal initiative petition ruling

Associated Press: Attorney General Drew Edmondson says he will not appeal a federal court ruling that struck down an Oklahoma law barring nonresidents from circulating initiative petitions. Edmondson's office also dismissed criminal charges Thursday against three people accused of violating the out-of-state petitioner ban. Richard Merrill Carpenter, Paul Jacob and Susan Elizabeth Johnson were charged in 2007 with hiring and using out-of-state residents to gather signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment called the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Edmondson says since he's not appealing the federal ruling it's only prudent to drop the criminal case.
